Each year, 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanised, according to the ASPCA (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats). That's 1.5 million sentient beings, who would have loved a happy home, many of whom would be of good temperaments and good health, killed just because they were unwanted and the shelters/rescues were overcrowded.
For individuals, please do your bit by:
* Always adopting rescue animals where possible when you want an animal/animals. You can get puppies and kittens, and purebred dogs and cats, in rescue, not all rescued animals have behavioural or psychological issues, and some rescued dogs and cats can be great for first-timers, great with kids, great with cats, great with dogs and great with other animals...
* Donate money to animal shelters and rescues.
* Donate food, treats, toys, beds, duvets, pillows, cat litter and any other items needed/wanted to animal shelters and rescues.
* Volunteer at shelters and rescues.
* Purchase, wear and use rescue and shelter merchandise.
* Help out with fundraising for shelters and rescues.
* Start, sign and share pro-animal petitions.
* Encourage others to do the same. If anyone you know wants to buy a puppy, kitten or other animal from a breeder or breed their animal/s, kindly educate them and persuade them to adopt a rescue animal/s instead, and not to breed, but to support rescues and shelters and animal rights instead.
As for Governments, please:
* Introduce mandatory spaying and neutering laws, with the exceptions of animals who are unsuitable for the operations and those whose carers have proper breeding licenses.
* Require all shelters and rescues to be completely no-kill when possible.
* Increase funding to animal shelters and rescues.
* Increase inspections of shelters and rescues.
* Don't allow shelters and rescues to discriminate against specific breeds and types, and get rid of BSL and replace it with kinder, more humane and effective, nonviolent legislation to prevent dog attacks on children, other people and other sentient beings...
* Increase required standards of animal care in shelters and rescues.
