Stop Human Trafficking

Modern day human trafficking is one of the fastest growin illegal industries.
Individuals may be held against their will as unpaid or underpaid domestic workers and/or forced into prostitution and isolated from people who could provide an escape.  Human trafficking peaks during major sporting events such as the Super Bowl, World Cup and Olympic games.  Indiana's Senate Bill 4, authored by Senators: Rany Head, Jim Banks and Greg Walker, would invoke tougher laws to prevent child and human trafficking. Governor Mitch Daniels and Attorney General Greg Zoeller have voiced support and hope to sign it by the February 5, 2012 Super Bowl date. for more information: http://www.spsmw.org/peace-justice/congregation-efforts/human-trafficking.aspx

Please sign this urgent petition to Gov. Mitch Daniels and Indiana General Assembly to voice your support for Senate Bill 4.

We applaud your awareness and initiative to pass an emergency bill prior to the  Super Bowl to prevent child and human trafficking.  The 2012 Super Bowl is an opportunity to bring much needed revenue and visitors to Indiana.  The far greater opportunity, however, is to make a difference in the lives of women and children and in family life all over the world.  Your challenge is to create a watershed moment in major sports events history.  It is to raise these events to a whole new level of upholding rather than denigrating human dignity.  The immediate goal should be Super Bowl 2012 as a celebration without exploitation.

This petition to pass Senate Bill 4 has been sponsored by the Congregation Peace and Justice Committee of the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, IN.  It has been signed by persons not only from Indiana, but also from other states and other countries.  This issue is not unique to Indiana but crosses state and international borders.

In urging you to pass Senate Bill 4, we are pleading with you to create a legacy that will send a resounding message not only to Indiana, but to the world.   This is a singular opportunity  to demonstrate the extraordinary and courageous leadership of the Indiana General Assembly.  We're counting on you to do your part to stop this enormous and shameful tragedy.  This issue will require an ongoing commitment of you and of us long after the 2012 Super Bowl is over.

Sincerely yours,

Donna Butler, SP
