Marked crosswalk across Quinpool Road between Vernon Street and Monastery Lane

We are requesting a crosswalk to be marked across Quinpool Road between Vernon Street and Monastery Lane to improve the safety of the pedestrians. The street has many businesses, educational organizations, residential units, and bus stops on both sides, and many people need to cross it during their daily travels. Without a marked crosswalk between Preston and Vernon streets, which are 400m distant from each other, we see people and children trying to cross the road in ways that are risking their safety. The situation is even worse during peak hours when the traffic is heavy and constant. As one of our instructors well illustrates:

"To say that it is difficult and dangerous for students and staff to cross this street would be a huge understatement. At times, it is life-threatening. Traffic lights with crosswalks are spaced very far apart on Quinpool. People will not walk the distance required to go far out of their way to get to the lights, and so simply take the risk, and cross. I have seen many 'near-misses' as people try to navigate the heavy traffic. Along with the students at our college, I urge the city to provide a safe way to cross this street, in the Monastery Lane area, before there is a terrible accident. A painted crosswalk with flashing light overhead would provide a warning to traffic, and would be a cost-effective solution." Susan Stacey, Instructor at NSCECE

The Halifax Traffic Authority has already approved a crosswalk in this location; however, it needs to be approved by the Regional Council in March/April 2020 when they vote on the 2020-21 final budget.

We require a safe place to cross the road without the risk of getting injured and the inclusion of the crosswalk in the 2020-21 budget.
