Stop Ocean Industrialization!

Our ocean is at risk.  Many polluting, climate-changing, expensive fossil fuel industries are attempting to invade our ocean, including offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling along the Atlantic coast and liquefied naturalg gas (LNG) facilities just off the NJ/NY coast.
We must choose green, renewable domestic energy that creates thousands of good, sustainable jobs.  The real answers to U.S. energy independence are conservation, efficiency, and renewable sources.
Existing laws and regulations are insufficient to protect the vast value of this ocean region and its living marine resources.  Therefore, we need the passage of "The NJ/NY Clean Ocean Zone" legislation.

We, the undersigned, vehemently object to activities that pollute or harm our ocean and support the Clean Ocean Zone legislation.

We the undersigned vehemently object to activities that pollute or harm our ocean and support the Clean Ocean Zone legislation.

The coasts of NY and NJ and the Gulf Stream create a tirangular mini-sea wedge within the ocean officially known as the NY/NJ Bight.  The physical, biological, and hydrodynamic characteristics of this 19,000 square-mile area are extraordinary.  This fantastic seaway feeds millions and provides an economic mainstay for a multi-billion dollar tourism industry as well as recreational and commercial fishing.

Laws and regulations are insufficient to protect the vast value of this ocean region and its living resources from polluting and habitat-destructive activities, such as ocean dumping of contaminated sediments, permanent extraction of offshore sand by industrial strip-miners, industrial complexes for fossil fuel imports and offshore gas and oil drilling, to name a few.  These destructive activities undermine the economic potentialities for the sustainable living marine resources and must be prohibited.  Elected officials must strive harder to protect the ocean.  The current battles are fought permit by permit, which is time-consuming, unproductive, and exhausting.

It is time to lock-in the tremendous path of progress which has led to far-reaching improvement in our ocean water quality and lock-out environmentally harmful activities, thereby ensuring the continued protection of the ocean today and for future generations.  The Clean Ocean Zone campaign seeks federal legislation to permanently protect the waters of the NJ/NY Bight; locking out the bad and locking in the good progress for a healthy ocean.

We thank you for your time in reading this letter and look forward to working with you.
