Please sign and share this petition in an effort to get Florida to do more to preserve and save many of their rare butterfly species. Without further help, many varieties of butterflies prevalent in Florida and other warm climates will become extinct and/or endangers. A couple dozen species of butterflies in Florida are currently threatened with extinction unless scientists and environmentalists do not do more to preserve their existence. One of the methods to save the various species is through captive breeding practices of captive-bred butterflies, caterpillars and larvae, along with many rare butterflies that are in danger of extinction. The recent breeding program involved four females and they managed to collect 100 eggs before releasing them.

A spokesperson for the wildlife conservation group stated that they tricked the eggs into hatching and laying even more eggs at a Gainesville lab and plan on releasing 200 to 300 of the brown and yellow-banded butterflies in the coming weeks. Altogether, they stockpiled more than 1,000 larvae. He stated “If we don’t do this, who knows what the history of the various Florida butterflies will be. They could go extinct in the next five years and we just can’t take that chance. When you start losing entire suites of butterflies, you know we’re not managing the habitat correctly.”

Butterflies, the great shape-shifters of the insect world, have long captured the hearts of many. Florida has roughly 160 species of butterflies. About 25 are considered in peril, the largest concentration of butterflies at risk in the U.S. So why are these butterflies in such danger? Butterflies could withstand the ravages of storms. But habitat loss accompanied by other dangers like mosquito spraying and poaching can amount to a near-fatal blow. Scientists and environmentalists need to implement a program of rules and regulations that will save the extinction of the many beautiful butterflies.

Florida Scientist and Environmentalist - You need to implement a program that will save the various of species of butterflies throughout Florida. Many of these various butterflies are threatened by extinction or on the endangered lists. Continue your work with multiple breeding programs, educational programs and other resources that can help in managing the butterfly habitat and increasing their numbers.
