Tell Papa John's to Fire Peyton Manning. Sexual Assault is Unacceptable.

  • by: Care2 Team

"I was repulsed. I was scared. I was intimidated."

That's how Jamie Naughright, a former University of Tennessee trainer, describes an alleged sexual assault by football celebrity Peyton Manning. Naughright first reported the assault more than 20 years ago, but the incident has received new attention in the wake of sexual harassment and assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein and other media figures.

Manning is a spokesperson for Papa John's International and owns 21 of the chain's stores in the Denver area. Yet Papa John's CEO John Schnatter (aka “Papa John") has been silent on Manning's alleged assault.

Instead, Schnatter raised eyebrows by suggesting that an anticipated slump in the chain's pizza sales is due to National Football League player protests against police violence and racism. Notably, Papa John provides no evidence for this claim and the chain's competitor, Pizza Hut, disputes whether or not pizza sales are slumping at all.

It is past time for Papa John's to stop making excuses and start making things right — especially in the wake of the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment. To stop harassment and assault, companies like Papa John's need to step up and take harassment and assault seriously. Neither money, fame, power, nor athletic ability can be allowed to excuse unwanted sexual contact.

That's why Care2 is calling on Papa John's to immediately end Peyton Manning's endorsement deal. With enough signatures, we believe that we can convince Papa John's to do the right thing. Can you help?
