Save the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia’s greatest natural resources. It helps bring in about five billion dollars of tourist money every year and is the home of an amazing diversity of wildlife. The fishing and tourists industries of the area depend upon it, and so of course does all this wildlife.

However, deliberately or inadvertently, the state government has just encouraged destructive development. It is weakening protective legislation, which could lead to a sudden rush of reef-wrecking projects.

The Great Barrier Reef is unlike anywhere else on Earth and value is priceless, although it certainly provides a sustainable, long-term income for thousands. Letting industry run amok means killing the goose that laid the golden egg – it is counterproductive greed.

Tell the Australian Government not let something so beautiful and so important be destroyed by the circling developers.

We the undersigned acknowledge recent moves to protect the vulnerable habitat of the Great Barrier Reef but ask that you address the recent changes in regulation, which were in effect the deregulation of previously protected areas.

This changes open up areas to development and is extremely bad news for the reef, which is already struggling to cope with climate change, pollution, invasive species and the industrial activities that are already taking place. It needs more protection from destructive development, not less.

Aside from its own intrinsic importance, the reef brings in billions of dollars each year to the Queensland economy through tourism and sustainable fishing operations. The short-term growth that might result from this weakening of regulation is not worth losing or degrading one of Australia’s main assets for.

We ask that you deal with this as a matter of urgency, at the very least tightening regulation to the previous standards and preferably making it stronger.

Thank you for your attention.
