Help Bring Alex Home!

Seeking Justice for Alexzander F. Dutton,

Taking place on October 1st, Alex spent all day working on his truck in the small town of Mulberry, Indiana at a friend's house. Later that night they became aware of a band playing at the local bar. Upon arriving to the bar, they each had a few drinks. It wasn't long after that another man (victim) and a group of men were singling them out and aggressively harassing them.

Several attempts to avoid an altercation were made by Alex, one of which included telling the bartender what was happening. However, the confrontation soon after became the inevitable and he was charged at and attacked by the man. Alex responded instinctively with a blow to the side of the man's head using a tool he had left in his pocket from previously working on his vehicle. He did this as he feared for his life and/or the sever bodily injury that was without a doubt just seconds away.

"In the United States, a stand-your-ground law is a law that authorizes an individual to protect and defend their own life and limb against threat or perceived threat even to the point of applying lethal force". Stand your ground laws generally state that, "under certain circumstances, individuals can use force to defend themselves without first attempting to retreat from the danger". It is true also that one does not have to leave anywhere that they have the lawful right to be.

According to witness testimonies from the bar, it was reported that the victim had a "crazy look in his eyes" and there was "no stopping him". It was also confirmed during the trial that Alex has no criminal history and did nothing to instigate the matter.

Alex feared for his life and his safety that night and the fight took place as he was attempting to leave. Under no circumstances was Alex deliberately looking for a fight that night but he was within his right to defend himself.

The courts deemed him guilty by the means of excessive force. "Excessive force refers to force in excess of what a police officer reasonably believes is necessary".

In which case, I assume that an officer under the circumstances may have even possibly opened fire.

"In the United States, 3,944 years have been served by innocent people in prison" and "For the past 23 years, over 2,000 wrongfully convicted persons have been exonerated".

Alex has 2 young children and is a great father and role model. He is a hardworking man and his goal for life is to continue with his mechanic career, provide for his family and live a simple life. Alex is now serving an 8-year sentence over an altercation that escalated unintentionally and that was out of his control.

We ask that if you agree that Alex was within his right, and believe this case should be justifiably overturned, that you sign this petition. I assure you that every signature counts.
We are desperately seeking justice on behalf of this man and are asking the public for help.

Thank you sincerely for your time and support.
