Another Mass Execution in Saudi Arabia Shows Urgent Need to Abolish the Death Penalty!

  • by: Care2 Team
  • recipient: Saudi Arabian government, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
Saudi Arabia recently executed 81 people, one of its largest mass executions yet. This is a human rights crisis and goes against a recent promise by Mohammed bin Salman, crown prince of Saudi Arabia, to reform the country's death penalty.

The death penalty is a blatant violation of human rights. Sign now to demand Saudi Arabia halt executions and abolish its death penalty!

Saudi Arabia's criminal justice system is known for its corruption, and judges often give death sentences following unfair trials. In many cases, verdicts are based on "confessions" extracted under torture or other forms of abuse. While the report did not state how these 81 individuals were executed, people sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia are typically beheaded.

According to the Saudi government's Ministry of Interior, a number of the executed people were convicted of charges such as "disrupting the social fabric and national cohesion" and "participating in and inciting sit-ins and protests." Half of those executed were part of Saudi Arabia's religious minority, Shi'a, which is frequently targeted by the government.

This execution raises the total number of executions to 92 just in the first few months of 2022 alone - but the number is likely much higher. Saudi Arabia is known for its lack of transparency in death penalty cases, so the number of prisoners placed on death row is always higher than what is publicly reported.

Show the Saudi Government the world is watching! Sign the petition to demand a halt to executions!

Saudi Arabia cares about its public image, especially the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman. While bin Salman wants us to see him as the reformer his country needs, he has also overseen many human rights crimes. U.S. intelligence agencies even believe bin Salman ordered the killing and dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabia has one of the highest execution rates in the world. This is not the first mass execution since Mohammed bin Salman started leading the Kingdom. Help us urge Saudi Arabia to abolish its death penalty!
