BMU :Dont let Garbage killing Wildlife, Free waste disposal for Ships in the Ports of the North Sea

1,300 plastic objects on average per square kilometer - this is the bottom of the North Sea.

There is a danger to Wildlife : Seabirds often get caught in lost fishing nets . But not only seabirds are affected in the marine areas . Seals, gray seals, whales, porpoises and numerous fish species can also become victims of our civilization waste.

In addition to tourism, shipping and fishing are the main causes of garbage pollution in the North Sea.

Up to 600,000 cubic meters of rubbish are now likely to be found on the seabed of the little overcrowded sea, which is already overused, and it is increasing every day.

Many captains simply throw their plastic waste into the sea instead of disposing of it in the port. The effects of the litter are serious, the penalties ridiculous. There would be a simple solution.

Waste disposal in many ports is chargeable.

In fact, the problem is dramatic. More and more garbage gets into the sea and since it is mostly made of plastic, it disintegrates over time into microscopic parts that can penetrate the food chain.

Even though the problem is pressing, politicians have so far failed to implement a simple and often required measure: to finally make waste disposal in the ports of the North Sea free of charge.

Politicians shift responsibilities to one another - or they are unsuspecting.

Waste disposal in ports is a cost factor. In the port of Hamburg, disposal ships collect the garbage directly from the ships. However, the port fees only include the delivery of one cubic meter of garbage. Each additional cubic meter costs 150 euros. With a large freighter, this can quickly be a disposal fee of 1000 euros - only for household-like waste. A lot of money that can be saved through illegal disposal.

The Baltic Sea region shows that there is another way, where most ports follow a recommendation of the intergovernmental Helcom Commission from 2007 and do not collect for waste disposal.

The demand for free disposal in the port is old. But when the EU regulated waste disposal in 2000, it rejected the proposal.

I request:

-Free waste disposal for ships in the ports of the North Sea

-Regular cleaning actions of the North Sea beaches

-More controls on the ships and harsher penalties

- Supporting comjmunities in the fight against plastics

- Ban senseless plastic packaging, rethink the packaging industry

-Support for new openings of zerowaste, plasticfree shops

- Ban on plastic bags
