We are demanding that Moogoo switches their packaging to aluminium, to protect people, animals, and the planet from harmful plastic.
Moogoo states on their website that they've evaluated two other packaging options from their current plastic bottles and tubes- refill pouches and glass. However, a great, sustainable option for their products would be aluminium tins and bottles.
The problems they have raised with glass- breakability, energy to manufacture and transport, and lack of recycling facilities- are lowered or eliminated with aluminium. Aluminium is difficult to break, and when it does, the pieces won't shatter or injure people. Aluminium takes much less energy to make, as it is infinitely recyclable, compared to plastic which can only be downcycled, and recycled aluminium saves 95% of the energy of virgin aluminium. Recycling is a place where aluminium really shines. It is infinitely recyclable, with over 75% of aluminium ever produced still being used, compared to only 9% of plastic being recycled and glass being used as a landfill cover. Also, if plastic isn't recycled, it breaks down into microplastics, harming animals, waterways and people. Plastic can also release harmful chemicals during its decomposition. Aluminium does not have these problems. Aluminium is much lighter than glass, and equal in weight to some plastics, so in transport, they are comparable.
They have also raised an issue with refill pouches- their difficulty to recycle, needing to be taken to soft plastics recycling facilities. As in the previous paragraph, their current plastic bottles and tubes are also difficult to recycle, capable only of being downcycled. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable, and recyclable in municipal recycling.
