Tell the Australian government to take climate change seriously

The Australian government, led by conservative politician Tony Abbott, has been charged with endangering the future of the planet by party leaders from his own side of politics.

Tony Abbott’s plan to axe the carbon price, which was already working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions without any economic damage to the Australian economy, has been heavily criticised by the UK’s Conservative Party.

Lord Deben, a former member of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s conservative cabinet and now chairman of the independent UK Committee on Climate Change, said the Abbott government’s actions were “appalling.”

Lord Deben noted that while the 66 countries that account for 88 per cent of global emissions have passed laws to address global warming, Australia is repealing them.

If the USA, UK, China and many European countries are taking action to address climate change, then Australia can too.
