As the nation mourns the lives lost in the senseless white supremacist massacre at a Tops grocery store in Buffalo, New York, a few people inexplicably are finding amusement in the tragedy.

Attica corrections officer Gregory C. Foster II has been suspended without pay for mocking the victims on social media, sharing a meme of the grocery store with a caption about "cleanup" in multiple aisles. Several of his fellow officers reacted to the meme with the "laugh" emoji.

If these men and women find it amusing to laugh at the slaughter of innocent Black Americans, they should not be allowed to be in any position where they hold a power imbalance and could inflict wanton violence on Black Americans, like prison guards in our carceral state can and do on a regular basis.
