Under a newly proposed omnibus bill, a person growing 201 marijuana plants in a rental unit would receive a longer mandatory sentence than someone who rapes a toddler or forces a child to have sex with an animal. The proposed legislation imposes one-year mandatory minimums for sexually assaulting a child, luring a child via the internet, or involving a child in bestiality. All three offenses carry lighter automatic sentences than the one-and-a-half-year sentence for growing more than 200 marijuana plants in a rental property.

Under the new bill, a pedophile who forces a child to watch pornography or exposes himself to children faces a minimum 90-day sentence, only half the term for someone convicted of growing six marijuana plants in their own home. The new maximum sentence for growing marijuana would double to 14 years, four years more than the sentence for someone sexually assaulting a child without a weapon.
