India – Do not make environmental protests a crime

Protesters in India that take a stand against coal mines, GMOs, nuclear power and giant dams could be deemed enemies of the state and a threat to economic growth.

A leaked intelligence report attacks tribal movements, NGOs and other activists into a block bent on stalling India’s development.

The report seeks to criminalise dissent and links all forms of protest to foreign instigation.

The report directly criticised the role of Greenpeace in “stalling India's development” by opposing nuclear power and GMOs.

However, blaming foreign ‘interests’ for the Indian protest movement is not new in India. In the course of the massive people's resistance to the Kudankulam reactor, the former Prime Minister of India blamed US-based NGOs for instigating protests.

India fought hard against colonialism to establish the biggest democracy in the world.  A basic tenant of democracy is the right to protest.
