It was discovered in 1932 by Albert William Herre, till late 1960 more than 5600 tonnes were fished because the traditional Chinese medicine believes in its powers to heal . The fishing continued and the Chinese Bahaba became so rare. It now classified as Critically Endangered in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list.
