Allow Darlene Necan To Build Her Own Home

This petition is in reponse to an article on CBC with news that has come forward that a homeless Aboriginal woman was fined by the Canadian Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for building a home for herself on land that the Ministry claims is not hers.

There are a number of underlying issues here. First of all, if government didn't want people building their own homes, then they should actually invest in affordable housing so that everybody in Canada, no matter what their circumstances, had adequate and affordable shelter.

Secondly, since she is an Aboriginal, she is amongst the very first settlers in the country we call Canada. When people of non-Aboriginal descent started to come to Canada, Canada's First Peoples welcomed them with open arms. In return they are plunged into deeper poverty and homelessness. This is no way to thank Canada's First Peoples who had a hand in building our country up to the amazing and beautiful place it is today.
