The dolphin drive hunt in Taiji, Japan, takes place every year from September to April, 2,000 dolphins are caught in Wakayama Prefecture for human consumption or resale to dolphinariums, the dolphin meat for consumption has been proven to have high murcury levels, lots of dolphins are sold to aquatic parks, instead of slaughterd, and Ted Hammond is one of the main brokers for Taiji.
A typical hunt the fishermen pursue pods of dolphins, banging metal poles beneath the water to confuse their hypresensitive sonar, the exhausted animals are driven into the cove which is sealed off by nets to stop them escaping.
The hunters drive a spike into the dolphins flesh before ramming a plug in the wound to stop the blood turning the sea red, they drown the animals by tying their fins and pushing them underwater.
