Taupo District Council are making a crucial decision on Tuesday for the future of the youth whether they are aware of it or not. By signing the Local Government Climate Declaration they will be ensuring the safety of our future, and the safety of our planet.
As councilors of our Taupo District it is their responsibility to take action for those without a voice. It is their responsibility to respect the land that we live and to respect the wishes of others. Ten of thousands of young people across Aoteroa joined the Climate Strike of Friday 15th, to show our want for a better future and more sustainable ways to be made within our community.
Our goal is to get the Councilors to sign this Declaration to say yes! We want them to hear our voice and speak for us - to speak for the youth! It is a moral responsibility they took upon themselves when they went for the job, all they need is to come through now.
The three key actions we want the Taupo District Council to take with signing the Local Government Climate Declaration is:
1) develop ambitious plans to cut emissions
2) work with communities to respond to the impacts of climate change
3) work with central government to cut emissions
Most important is their Development and Implement of ambitious action plans that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support resilience within our own councils and for our local communities. These plans will:
a. promote walking, cycling, public transport and other low carbon transport
b. work to improve the resource efficiency and health of homes, businesses and
infrastructure in our district; and
c. support the use of renewable energy and uptake of electric vehicles.
By signing this petition, you will be helping to change the mind of those Councilors planning on saying no. You will be helping the youth and ensuring a better future for us.
