Pitt County NC citizens demand glass recycling for the community

PETITION TO: PITT COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

We are petitioning the Pitt County Board of Commissioners to reconsider the problem of glass recycling practices in our city. Few of us were aware that the elimination of glass from the recycle stream occurred in July 2020 and recently learned that we had to put our glass with the regular trash.

As concerned citizens, we feel it is extremely irresponsible to dispose of glass in this manner since it takes 4000 to 1 million years for glass to breakdown. Here in Pitt County trash disposal and recycling have already been deficient, and we foresee a problem in the future as the city continues to grow. We do not have a landfill, and our trash is taken to neighboring counties. A solution for the future must be established before the problem grows larger.

We understand there may be viable solutions to this particular issue on glass recycling as there is a glass processing plant in Wilson at only 30 miles from Greenville. We respectfully propose the following potential alternatives: 1) Educate the public regarding the need to separate glass from other recyclable objects, 2) Alternate collection of comingled recyclables and glass, 3) Deliver the glass to Strategic materials Inc. in Wilson.

We, the undersigned, are able and willing to separate glass from the rest of recyclables to facilitate the collection and proper disposal of these items. We realize you need cooperation, and we are ready to work with you to create an environmentally friendly community and a wonderful place to live.
