Clean up 51st Street

There is a huge pile of debris on city-owned property on 51st Street between Shafter and Webster that has been there since August 2018. This growing mound of collected items—buckets, cardboard, desk chairs, trash bins—is a fire and sanitary hazard, a neighborhood blight, and it deters community members—including an increasing number of families with young children—from walking on that side of the street.

City officials and our local councilmember Dan Kalb have declined to address this illegal dumping in any meaningful way. Police are unable to help without support from city officials.

We ask the city of Oakland to clean it up and take steps to make sure it does not happen again.

Update #25 years ago
Hi everyone. Tomorrow is the big day when the city will clear 51st Street. This is good, but there has to be followup to keep him from building it back up again or we're not solving the problem. It's important to keep the pressure on, so if you have time today or tomorrow, please email Dan Kalb and Joe Devries and push them for answers. Contacts below, thanks!

Greetings everyone, thanks again for signing! Just wanted to provide an update: The city has scheduled a "clean & clear" for Thursday Jan. 24. (the head of encampment cleanup promised a "deep clean.") That's good news, but we should remember that they did the same thing in November only for the man to immediately build up the pile again. The ultimate goal is for the city to clean up the mess take steps to prevent it from happening again. I'll keep you posted.
