Pelo fim do cativeiro de golfinhos em Portugal; End of captivity for dolphins - Portugal;

EM INGLÊS - In english

Dolphins are extremely intelligent animals that require vast expanses of sea to be able of having dignifying lives, where they reach full maturity and reproduce creating offspring that reach adulthood.

It has been widely demonstrated that these animals when living in dolphinaria they have a life expectancy much shorter than when living in their natural environment.

At sea they form complex families and manifest behaviors of altruism towards their own kind and even towards individuals of other species, such as towards man.

The legislators of Portugal have the duty of creating laws that prohibit the keeping of these animals in captivity for entertainment purposes. Thus, the currently dolphinaria in Portugal should be prohibited of acquisition, exchange or receiving free of charge any specimen of dolphin for their facilities.

There are currently two dolphinaria in Portugal, one is present on the premises of Jardim Zooloógico of Lisbon and the other one is Zoomarine in Guia, Algarve.

There are also currently several organizations working for the rehabilitation and release into the wild of dolphins that were kept in captivity for most of there life, and, therefore it should be concluded protocols for the effective release of the dolphins still held captive by dolphinaria acting in Portuguese territory.

Dolphins deserve to live in the sea and not inside a tank of water being forced to do tricks for the amusement of some humans.
