Demand the Pardon of Teen Bride for Killing Her Rapist in Self-Defense

Noura Hussein, a 19-year-old girl, was raped by her husband while his cousins held her down. When they returned after a short break, to rape her again, she stabbed her husband in self-defence, killing him.

For defending herself against a man she was forced to marry, Noura Hussein has been sentenced to death.

Let's urge that real justice is done. Sign this petition to demand that the real victim is exonerated and set free to live out her life with the freedoms she deserves as a young woman.

Noura was forced to contractually marry her cousin when she was 16. After the contract was signed, she fled to Eastern Sudan, where she remained in hiding for three years, only for her father to trick her into coming back by saying her marriage had been revoked. When she returned she was coerced into marrying the man she had run from all those years ago.

Six days later, in April 2017, she refused to consummate the marriage. Her husband called his cousins, and she was held down and beaten into submission so that her husband could rape her. Soon after, her husband tried to rape her again, but she stabbed him in self-defence.

Noura panicked and escaped to her family home, only for her father to turn her over to police, where she arrested and detained at Omdurman Women's Prison.

Noura was found guilty of premeditated murder under Sharia law in late April 2018. If found guilty under this law, the person is sentenced to either a fine or to death. Marital rape and forced child marriage are not illegal in Sudan, so the evidence regarding these circumstances cannot be used in court.

In Sudan, the deceased individual's family chooses the punishment, choosing either a pardon, money or a death sentence. The family chose execution, so on May 10, Noura was sentenced to death.

Noura is a victim here, she has been subjected to an unwanted marriage to her cousin who had no problems beating her and raping her. She does not deserve the death penalty, she deserves a life free from fear and victimisation.

Respectfully urge, his Excellency, H.E Omar Hassan Ahmad al- Bashir, to ensure that Noura, a victim of extreme violence can obtain justice, by dropping all criminal charges laid against her, and ceasing any further legal action to have her executed.
