Demand a levy on plastic bags

In August 2016, there was much discussion regarding plastic bags and whether or not introducing a levy on all plastic shopping bags was a policy which New Zealand Government wanted to introduce. A plastic bag levy was not on the National Government’s radar due to the fact that the Ministry of the Environment advised against the scheme. The Ministry’s argument was that “New Zealand is a small country and we don’t contribute a lot to the marine waste, so why should we do anything”.
The change which I am hoping to implement, is to introduce a mandatory levy on Major Supermarket provider plastic shopping bags to reduce the amount of plastic which pollutes the environment which we are living in. Marine life worldwide are suffering due to this plastic pollution. Many supermarkets claim that they encourage their customers to reduce their plastic bag use through bringing in their own re-useable shopping bags, or purchasing reusable bags in store. Although it is up to you the consumers to take the lead and push for stricter conditions. Sign the petition today to show that you care about the marine life and your environment.
