On humanitarian grounds, don’t send Clément Nkurunziza to Burundi, to his death.
Mr. Clément Nkurunziza is on the verge of being forcefully sent to Burundi from the USA, and he runs a high risk of being executed by the de facto government of Burundi’s security forces or militia. There is no doubt that, were Clement to reach Burundi, his life would be in jeopardy. His background of activism and his professional career perfectly correspond to the profile of victims of the murderous regime in Burundi today.
- In march 2015, Clément Nkurunziza joined other Burundian intellectuals living abroad in urging President Pierre Nkurunziza not to violate the constitution by running for an illegal third term.

Those who made similar statements from inside the country were fired from their government jobs, killed, or driven into exile. Even a Vice-President and the speaker of parliament had to find refuge abroad. Unable to reach Clément Nkurunziza, the President’s forces of repression may have assassinated his younger brother Alexis Nimubona on 08/18/2017. He appeared to have died of poisoning, and no police investigations of his case ever took place.
- In 2013, while pursuing doctoral studies in political science at Annamalai Universtiy in Chenai, India, Clément Nkurunziza denounced selective and unjust dispossessions of property carried out by a controversial commission (CNTB:Commission Nationale chargée des Terres et autres Biens)

- In 2004, Clément Nkurunziza was a Social and Cultural Affairs adviser to the then Vice-President, Alphonse Marie Kadege. The current President had Mr. Kadege unjustly jailed and subjected to horrendous torture, to near death. Anyone associated with him became suspicious.
- As president of the student union at the local university (ASSER: Association des Etudiants de Rumuri) during the civil war, Clement Nkurunziza made several appeals through local and international media asking, among others, for the protection of students from attacks by terrorist and genocidal militia who were attacking civilians throughout the country. His pleas followed attacks at the Kiriri Campus where students were killed and many were injured.
- While ASSER had been the official student union at the University of Burundi from its founding days, the current government of Burundi has outlawed it, tagging it as a militia. That’s unfortunate especially since that wrong characterization has been picked up outside Burundi even though that was never true. Because Clément Nkurunziza was at some point a president of ASSER, he has been accused of belonging to a militia and of crimes he has never committed by the president’s party (CNDD-FDD) supporters.
For all those reasons, if Clément Nkurunziza were to set foot in Burundi now, his life would be immediately in danger. Assassinations, torture, kidnappings, rapes, and forced disappearances are a daily occurrence in Burundi. Those are perpetrated by the President’s militia, the presidential police, and other security forces. A September 2017 report by the United Nations Human Rights organization clearly documents such crimes happening right now:

For the raisons above, and considering the current situation in Burundi, the undersigned are petitioning the relevant United States of America authorities not to send Clement Nkurunziza to Burundi.

Sur le point d’être envoyé de force au Burundi par les États-Unis d’Amérique, Monsieur Clément Nkurunziza court un grand risque d’être tué par les miliciens et les organes du pouvoir de facto en place à Bujumbura. Il ne fait aucun doute que si Clément Nkurunziza se retrouvait à la portée des criminels impunis et impénitents qui dirigent le Burundi, sa vie ne pèserait pas lourd. Son parcours socio-professionnel correspond parfaitement au profil des victimes ciblées par ce régime sanguinaire :
- en mars 2015, Clément Nkurunziza a joint sa voix à celle des autres intellectuels burundais vivant à l’étranger pour interpeller Pierre Nkurunziza qui ne cachait plus ses intentions de violer la Constitution en se portant candidat aux élections présidentielles une troisième fois.

- les principales figures politiques et de la Société Civile qui, à l’instar de Clément Nkurunziza, se sont opposées à la violation de la Constitution par Pierre Nkurunziza sont soit en prison, soit en exil ou ont été tuées. Même un vice-président, et le président du parlement ont trouvé refuge à l’étranger. Ne pouvant pas atteindre Clément, les forces de répression du président Burundais semblent s’être rabattues sur son petit-frère Alexis Nimubona qui a été assassiné le 18 Aout 2017 au Burundi. Il semble avoir été empoisonne et la police n’a fait aucune enquête.
- en 2013, de l’Université d’Anamalai au Chenaï (Inde) où il poursuivait ses études doctorales en Sciences Politiques, Clément Nkurunziza a dénoncé les désappropriations ciblées qui ont caractérisé la très controversée et très injuste CNTB (Commission Nationale chargée des Terres et autres Biens).

- en 2004, Clément Nkurunziza a presté comme Conseiller chargé des Questions Sociales et Culturelles auprès du Vice-président Alphonse Marie Kadege, à qui la police présidentielle a failli ôter la vie en lui infligeant des tortures sans précédent après l’avoir arrêté et emprisonné injustement. Toute personne associée a lui est devenue suspecte.
- en sa qualité de Président du Comité Exécutif de l’ASSER (Association des Étudiants de Rumuri) au plus fort de la guerre, Clément Nkurunziza a fait moult interventions sur les média nationaux et internationaux pour, entre autres choses, demander la protection des étudiants contre les milices terroristes et génocidaires qui attaquaient de paisibles citoyens dans tout le pays, y compris sur le Campus Universitaire de Kiriri où ils ont fait des morts et des blessés dans la communauté estudiantine.
- Même si l’ASSER a toujours été reconnue par les autorités, et ce depuis les toutes premières années de l’Université du Burundi, comme seul organe représentant officiellement les intérêts des étudiants, le régime du CNDD-FDD s’est empressé de l’interdire dès son avènement, l’accusant injustement d’être une milice, imputation qui, malheureusement sera reprise jusqu’au-delà des frontières nationales. De ce fait, le passage de Clément Nkurunziza à la Présidence de l’ASSER a servi de prétexte aux média affiliés au pouvoir du CNDD-FDD de lui imputer des crimes qu’il n’a jamais commis.
Pour toutes ces raisons,
Si Clément Nkurunziza se retrouvait au Burundi, sa vie serait en danger d’autant plus que les assassinats, les disparitions et les tortures perpétrés par les organes du pouvoir et les miliciens qui leur servent d’auxiliaires, sont ordonnés par les plus hautes autorités de l’État comme l’atteste le rapport d'enquête de la Commission des Nations Unies pour les Droits de l'Homme rendu public ce 4 septembre 2017 :
