Protect the architectural heritage of Surfside Florida from overdevelopment

To preserve and protect historic architectural styles of Surfside and limit further exploitation by developers.

This petition is created in the spirit of Barbara Baer Capitman and Leonard Horowitz, the passionate visionaries who founded the Miami Design Preservation League and revitalized South Beach into a world renowned destination of Art Deco architecture.

Many unique buildings were lost to developers in South Beach before 1980 and now the nearby neighborhoods of North Beach, Surfside and Bay Harbor Islands are endangered from eager developers backed by big Banks with little aesthetcs. These developers want to cover every inch of property with cold concrete and glass to replace the quaint historic buildings that are Surfside's architectural heritage. The Town has attracted business and tourism for years with its charm and comfortable spaces to enjoy the ocean breeze.

Officials must recognize the value of these architectural jewels. Save 9340 Collins Avenue from demolition by developers who don't understand the significance of this 1940's building with excellent Streamline Moderne architecture and Seaway Villas at 9149 Collins Avenue a charming beachfront property and the first apartment house in Surfside built in 1936. Save the district of notable mid-century MiMo architectural buildings that line the blocks of 90th Street through 94th Street between Collins Avenue and Harding Avenue. Together, these buildings collectively reflect the pattern of development and evolution of architectural styles that historically defined the character of Surfside.

Sign this petition to tell officials in the State of Florida and Miami-Dade County to designate these buildings for Historic Preservation. Do not let the miscalculations of the developers compromise these magniicent original designs that were built for pleasure and leisure, not only profit. Preserving these buildings will enhance and transform the Town like the glamour of South Beach instead of allowing developers to construct a concrete jungle.

Update #19 years ago
Thank you for your signatures and comments!
Ultimately, we won because of the historic integrity and significance of the buildings as proven by the invaluable research of Miami Dade Historic Preservation Board. We saved Seaway Villas and the facade of 9340 Collins Avenue. Our history is still threatened by big development so I hope you will remain involved in preserving our precious architecture.
Sincerely,
Tina Paul
