Congress: Protect Women's Rights and Say NO To Heartbeat Bill

On Thursday, a national "Heartbeat Bill" was introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives. Steve King, a Republican from Iowa, sponsored the bill. He claimed, "My legislation will require all physicians, before conducting an abortion, to detect the heartbeat of the unborn child. If a heartbeat is detected, the baby is protected."

The heartbeat can be detected at six weeks of pregnancy, sometimes even sooner. Most women do not even know they are pregnant at six weeks. Thus, this bill directly challenges the Supreme Court decisions that have guaranteed a woman's right to choose.

It's a step in the direction of an all-out abortion ban. Many states already lack adequate access to abortion clinics, and some require a 24-hour waiting period before women can actually have access to the procedure. Even women who managed to find out they were pregnant at six weeks - a rarity - may not make the cut under this highly invasive bill.

It makes women unsafe. Safe and fair abortion access is an essential element in women's healthcare. In states with fewer abortion clinics and more limited restrictions - such as Mississippi, where there is only one clinic remaining in the entire state - the rates of google searches for "self-induced abortions/miscarriages" skyrocket. Women have, and will continue to, get abortions regardless of whether or not states accommodate them properly. This bill puts all women seeking safe, lawful, and legally-protected abortions at dangerous risk.

Sign this petition now to tell Congress: we will not allow women's rights to be stripped of 40 years of progress. We support a woman's right to choose! Vote against the national "Heartbeat Bill!"
