Save Beagles From Being Bred For a Life of Suffering in Experiments

Last year public outcry helped stop plans to build a breeding facility for beagles intended for research in the UK, but the company that caused the controversy isn't giving up and has proposed a similar project at the same site.

Bantin & Kingman Universal Ltd (B&K) currently owns the site in East Yorkshire and has submitted similar plans that the company's general manager said are scaled down and address issues that were previously raised.

However, the company doesn't address the inherent cruelty involved in using dogs in experiments or the validity of animal testing – which are concerns animal advocacy organizations, celebrities and the general public are raising

Last year more than 3,000 dogs were used in experiments in the UK. Undercover investigations of the only other facility in the UK that breeds beagles for research have already shown that the lives of dogs who are used in experiments or killed as "surplus stock" are a nightmare and not something dogs, or any other animal, should ever be subjected to.

Opponents of the project argue that in addition to the cruelty involved, the facility will cause problems for local residents by subjecting them to a lengthy construction project, damage large vehicles will cause to roadways, sound pollution and the disposal of animal waste. Thoe fighting against this proposal are hoping the East Riding Council will consider these factors before approving the plan because it won't be denied on an ethical basis alone or simply because we love dogs.

Please sign the petition urging the East Riding Council to deny B&K's proposal on both ethical grounds and over concerns residents have raised about the proposal.

As someone who is concerned about animal welfare, I was disappointed to learn that Yorkshire Evergreen has submitted another proposal to expand its facility in East Yorkshire to breed beagles intended for research.

Previous denials of the company's proposal by both the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and the Planning Committee of East Riding Council were the right  decision, both for the beagles who would have suffered as a result and for local residents.

While ethical concerns regarding vivisection may not be a driving factor in the decision of whether or not to allow the company to move forward, approving the proposal would be counter to promises made by the Coalition Government to reduce animal testing overall.

I sincerely hope you will once again deny Yorkshire Evergreen's proposal.
