Get Rid of Phenols in Thermal Paper

Do you know what Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bisphenol S (BPS) are? BPA and BPS are chemicals, called phenols, that can, if they get in your bloodstream, give you mental disabilities, heart problems, hormonal disorders, diabetes, and cancer.

Most receipts are developed with phenols, which can come off and get all over your hands every time you touch a receipt. People like cashiers are especially vulnerable from touching receipts over and over again, all day long. These chemicals are slowly poisoning your blood, and the worst part is, many store managers are aware of this and they are doing nothing about it! Also, these phenols cause most receipts to NOT actually be recyclable, despite popular belief. We are proposing a ban on all phenol-based thermal paper. Similar bans are already in place in Conneticut, and are pending in Massechusetts and New York.

Instead of phenol-based thermal paper, we suggest using a brand of thermal paper called Alpha® Free. Alpha® Free receipts are developed with vitamin C instead of phenols. The benefits of Alpha® Free receipts are as follows:
They are recyclable and compostable.
They do not contain harmful chemicals.
They can come in contact with your skin without producing any negative effects.

Another option is electronic receipts. Rather than using physical receipts that you touch and handle, you just key in your e-mail and the receipt is sent to you. This minimizes contact with receipts, and it saves paper.

These are just a few of the alternatives to phenol-based receipts. As you can see, they are not very hard. This is a major issue with a simple fix. By signing this petition it shows legislators and store owners that you care about what’s happening to you, and that you support a statewide ban on toxic receipts.
