Stop the Demolition of 339 Fifth Avenue and NOMAD District!

New York is now facing a crisis in which our magnificent built heritage is being winnowed away brick by brick, block by block. The most recent attack on the character of New York City came with a request for a demolition permit for the irreplaceable 129-year-old Demarest Building at 5th Avenue and 33nd street to make way for a 24-story hotel.

The Demarest Building is the only structure of its kind on the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 23rd and 34th streets. And if we don't do something now, it could be lost forever.

For nearly ten years, the 29th Street Neighborhood Association has sought preservation of the architecturally and culturally significant district north of Madison Square (NOMAD) in Manhattan from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), the only agency able to truly protect this unique built heritage.

We have received support from elected officials, preservation organizations, community leaders and thousands of individuals for landmark designation of these irreplaceable buildings and submitted proposals and reports to make our caseDuring these years of LPC inaction, we have watched building after building succumb to the wrecking ball to be replaced by over-scale, bland luxury towers and silver hotels used now as shelters for homeless people.

Sign and share this petition to the LPC chair and our elected officials to urge them to save the Demrest Building and the remaining significant buildings in NOMAD before it is too late.

Dear Chair Srinivasan:

I understand that you are currently considering landmark designation of the irreplaceable 115-year-old Kaskel and Kaskel Building at 316 5th Avenue at 32nd Street.

As you know, this is just one of the remarkable buildings in the area that has been proposed five times as a Madison Square North Historic District Extension by the 29th Street Neighborhood Association.

After LPC in action for nearly ten years and the loss of dozens of remarkable structures, we are now faced with a crisis in which our magnificent built heritage is being winnowed away brick by brick, block by block.

I IMPLORE YOU AND THE OFFICIALS COPIED HERE TO ACT TO PROTECT NOT JUST THE STELLAR KASKEL BUILDING BUT ALSO THE OFT-PROPOSED SURROUNDING DISTRICT REPEATEDLY PROPOSED BY THE 29TH STREET NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION.
