Tell the Dutch Senate to Stop the Burqa Ban!
The Dutch Parliament has voted to ban face coverings in public places such as hospitals, government buildings, schools and public transportation. The ban includes Islamic veils -- or burquas -- that cover women's faces.
The ban must now go before Senate before it becomes law. Under a similar law passed in Bulgaria earlier this year, women wearing a face-covering Islamic veil would be forced to pay a fine of 770 euros. Amnesty International called the move, "part of a disturbing trend of intolerance, xenophobia and racism in Bulgaria".
Only a few hundred woman in the Netherlands wear the burqa. Enforcing the ban would deny them the right to practice their religion while taking public transportation or attending school.
