We have come to the conclusion that the school dress code is very unfair. This problem has been occurring all over America, and with the recent changes to the dress code at Long River Middle School, we have decided that some action has to be taken, even if it's just here, at this school.
Dress codes have been criticized as sexist for many reasons. Some being that they unfairly target girls by body-shaming and blaming them for promoting sexual harassment. Cases show that women are being shunned by school officials, sent home, or banned from attending school events like prom or homecoming.
Other problems have occurred with school dress codes, not just focusing on women, but members of the LGBTQ+ community, more so being transgender students. This being on the grounds that the rules rigidly dictate on students' self expression. Transgender pupils have been, in some cases, sent home for wearing clothing opposite to those "assigned" to their legal sex, while others have been excluded from yearbooks or school activities. MtF students, and vice versa, have been disciplined for their choice of clothing. This has caused an excessive amount of backlash from members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as those excluded from the community.
As you can see, the school dress code is very corrupt. It's 2016, everyone, and we believe it's time for a change. By signing this petition, you're looking at a better future for LRMS, and a better future for you.
