A teacher assistant, teacher's aide (TA) or education support professional (ESP) is an individual who assists a teacher with instructional and student responsibilities. They generally have a fixed salary determined by each contract period. Teacher assistants often help the teacher who work with exceptional student education (ESE) students who may have a learning disability, such as ADHD, Autism, or even physical disabilities, such as blindness or deafness.
As a teacher assistant for the last 4 going on 5 years I must say that I truly love what I do, but I do not like the very low salary. As teacher assistants we do so much on a day to day basis, but never get the recognition or the pay that a teacher assistant deserves. As professional adults we are expected to pay rent, bills, buy groceries etc. on a low $17,000 or less a year.

Some teacher assistants work only with special education students. These students often are mainstreamed (attend regular classes), and teacher assistants help them understand the material and adapt the information to their learning style. With students who have more severe disabilities, assistants may work with them both in regular classes and in separate classes. Teacher assistants may help these students with basic needs, such as feeding or personal hygiene. With young adults, they may help students with disabilities learn skills necessary for them to find a job after graduation.
After talking to different TAs and ESPs most would like to see increased salaries, more chances for promotion, and additional professional development opportunities. They would like to see clearer job descriptions and greater awareness and appreciation of their work. Most TAs and ESPs mentioned that they do not have a written job description; do not have any input into changes to their job description; and are often or sometimes asked to perform duties outside of their job description.
A teacher Assistant starts at $11.00 an hour and when Broward County does a bargaining unit we may or may not get an increase. The last time there was an increase it was 2% which amounted to about .23 extra an hour. We need to come together as one and request that, classroom assistants as well as teacher assistants get paid more.
In summary a Teacher assistant does so much and is expected to survive off of a menial salary. I am proposing today that we all get together and sign this petition to have our salary start at $20,000 a year as opposed to $12,000 - $15,000 a year.
