SAVE THE TREES ALONG NORTH TERRITORIAL ROAD IN WASHTENAW COUNTY

North Territorial Road is one of the oldest roads in Michigan. It is lined with beautiful trees and hundreds of Old Growth trees ranging from 150-300 years old. This Road was one of the first roads in Michigan and has a history of being an old Native American Indian Trail, once part of the Dexter Trail,  Grand River Trail and Plymouth Trail. This trail dates back to the 16th Century and has possibly existed hundred of years before. This road today is also known as North Territorial Road. 

The Washtenaw County Road Commission is currently removing over 350 trees along a 8.3 mile stretch of North Territorial Road, from Gotfredson Road in Salem Township to Spencer Road in Northfield Township. The project is being funded by a federal safety grant and is part of a $950,000 project to make the road safer by creating a 10 foot clear zone along the roadside.

The work on North Territorial Road already is underway and is expected to be done by the end of March. The Road Commission is planning to remove more trees along other tree-lined county roads in the coming years, most likely extending this farther down North Territorial Road, through Webster, Dexter and Lynden Townships.

Concerned citizens, historians and environmentalist want to keep the natural beauty of North Territorial Road and its trees. We want the cutting to stop on healthy and Old Growth Trees. We want all of North Territorial Road in Washtenaw County, Michigan to be protected from this unnecessary tree slaughter. Please sign this petition so we can show the Washtenaw County Road Commission that this tree cutting is unnecessary and needs to be stopped immediately.
