17-year-old died from female genital mutilation - Demand enforcement of anti-FGM laws in Egypt

Just days ago, a 17-year-old girl named Mayar Mohammed Moussa died in Egypt during an illegal female genital mutilation (FGM) operation. The hospital where the surgery was performed has been shut down, and there is an investigation underway. But this is an all too common occurrence in Egypt, where 9 out of 10 women between ages 15 and 49 still get FGM surgery, despite it being illegal.

FGM is the ritual practice of removing the external female genitalia, usually using a blade. It is a horrific practice that has been recognized by the UN as a human rights violation. It is a harmful practice for these women physically and emotionally. While Egypt and other countries have made this practice illegal, the enforcement is so poor that FGM is still being performed by doctors.

Please sign to demand stronger enforcement of FGM laws in Egypt. Any doctor still performing FGM must be prosecuted under the law, including the doctor who performed the fatal operation on Mayar Mohammed Moussa.
