The director of the CDC called them "one of the most powerful weapons we have to slow and stop the spread of the [corona]virus." Countries that have required them for months have kept their infection and death rates extremely low. They are saving lives. So why are masks still being treated as optional in the U.S.?
Sign the petition if you think it is time that the U.S. joined the countless other nations that have federal mask mandates! We need this lifesaving legislation NOW!
Sure, states have taken it upon themselves to pass local legislation mandating masks in indoor public spaces, on public transit, and outdoors when social distancing at a separation from 6 feet or more from others isn't possible. But because only 34 states, plus Washington D.C., have mask mandates, folks in the other 16 states are slipping through the cracks and risking the health and safety of everyone around them.
Florida, for example, has been adamant about not implementing a statewide mask requirement, and has thus set records for COVID-19 case numbers and death rates. If Florida was a country, it would have the 7th highest COVID-19 case rate in the world (as of the time of this writing on September 9, 2020). The state has already lost more than 12,000 lives to COVID-19.
In comparison, Vietnam made wearing a mask compulsory on March 16th, choosing a path of aggressive prevention. The country did not experience a single COVID-19 related death until late July; as of September 9, 2020, only 35 deaths due to COVID-19 were recorded in the country.
While there are multiple factors in successful containment of the virus: epidemiologists and public health experts alike all agree: masks work. Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC have made it their stance clear as well: masks save lives. By refusing to pass a federal mask mandate, nor definitively endorse mask-wearing, President Trump and his government are risking the lives of millions.
