It's bad enough that Republicans spent a month downplaying the threat of the coronavirus pandemic, but it's so much worse than that.
Even as they echoed President Trump's dishonest claim that coronavirus was no big deal, Senators Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) and Richard Burr (R-NC) profited off classified briefings that divulged the seriousness of the outbreak, selling millions in stocks before the crash.
"Concerned about #coronavirus?" Loeffler tweeted as she was selling her stocks. "Remember this: The consumer is strong, the economy is strong, & jobs are growing, which puts us in the best economic position to tackle #COVID19 & keep Americans safe."
For his part, Burr tweeted that America is "better prepared than ever before to face emerging public health threats" just one week before selling his stock.
If nothing else, these two episodes make clear that our nation's impotent response to this outbreak was not the result of incompetence alone but also corruption. Their downplaying of the virus was a lie, pure and simple. That they went so far as to profit off those lies is beyond the pale.
Add your name to demand the resignations of Senators Loeffler and Burr for withholding the truth from suffering Americans for their own personal profit!
