Save the Gardens!

In the heart of the Dutch town of Sittard, near the city walls, you can find centuries old, secret gardens surrounded by beautiful, thick hedgerows of cornel. Small paths cross this area and show visitors glimpses of the well-maintained gardens. These gardens are most likely the oldest of its kind in Europe, originating from the second half of the 17th century. This makes them unique cultural heritage and of great historical value.

Besides this historical value the gardens provide a home for a lot of birds and useful insects like honey bees, solitary bees and bumble bees. Also bats are flying around a lot. All these animals enjoy the abundance of food and nesting opportunities, something they can't find in other places in the city center. The gardeners, who are mostly people living in an apartment with just a balcony, can put all their love and passion in growing and harvesting their own fresh, organic food.

Despite the historical and ecological value, the charm and unique atmosphere of this area, the municipality of Sittard has developed plans to dramatically change the area. Gardens and hedges need to make space for grass, small paths for big roads of asphalt. About everything that makes this place unique and gives it its value, will be destroyed.

These plans are also completely the opposite of what should be done with nowadays important issues like the die-off of bees and the way we get our food. Everywhere in world projects arise that focus on 'less grass, more flowers' and 'less grass, more food', while with their plans the municipality goes for exactly the opposite: less flowers, less food, more grass. This is something that simply doesn't make sense in anyway, not for historical reasons, not for ecological reasons, not for aesthetic reasons, not for safety reasons.

Therefore, we want to ask the municipality to review their plans and come with a design that doesn't kill everything that gives the gardens their value.

In het hartje van Sittard, dichtbij de stadswal, liggen eeuwenoude, geheime tuinen, die worden omgeven door prachtig dikke kornoeljehagen. Nauwe grindpaadjes doorkruisen het gebied en trakteren voorbijgangers hier en daar op een blik in de tuinen. Het gebied is waarschijnlijk de oudste in z'n soort in heel Europa, ontstaan in de tweede helft van de 17de eeuw. Het is daarmee uniek cultureel erfgoed en van grote historische waarde.

Daarnaast is het een thuis voor vele vogels en nuttige insecten, zoals honingbijen, wilde bijen en hommels. Ook vleermuizen vliegen er veel rond. Al deze dieren hebben in de binnenstad verder weinig te zoeken wat betreft voedsel en nestgelegenheid. De tuinders, veelal mensen met een appartementje in de binnenstad, kunnen er hun liefde en passie voor al wat groeit en bloeit kwijt en heerlijk vers, biologisch voedsel oogsten.

Ondanks de historische en ecologische waarde, de charme en de unieke sfeer van het gebied zoals het is, wil de gemeente er drastische veranderingen gaan aanbrengen. Tuinen en hagen moeten plaats maken voor gras, smalle grindpaadjes voor brede, geasfalteerde wegen. Vrijwel alles wat het gebied nu waarde geeft en uniek maakt, zal hiermee verloren gaan. Ook gaat het in tegen allerlei zaken die in deze tijd belangrijk zijn, zoals de bijensterfte en de manier waarop we aan ons voedsel komen. Zo gaan er overal ter wereld stemmen op voor 'minder gras, meer bloemen' en 'minder gras, meer voedsel', terwijl de gemeente met de huidige plannen juist gaat voor 'minder bloemen, minder voedsel, meer gras'. Dit alles valt in onze ogen niet te rechtvaardigen, niet in historische zin, niet in ecologische zin, niet in esthetische zin en niet omwille van de veiligheid. Wij willen de gemeente dan ook nadrukkelijk vragen de huidige plannen te herzien en met een ontwerp te komen dat geen afbreuk doet aan alles wat het gebied z'n waarde geeft. Daarom: RED ons CULTUREEL ERFGOED!!! RED de TUINEN!!! Onderteken deze petitie!
