Prohibicion del aleteo en Chile // Support the shark finning ban in Chile

Respetados miembros del Senado y la Camara de Representantes del Congreso Nacional de Chile,

Los tiburones han jugado un papel fundamental manteniendo los ecosistemas marinos sanos y equilibrados desde antes de la epoca de los dinosaurios. Sin embargo, estos depredadores estan siendo retirados de los oceanos a un ritmo insostenible. Los cientificos estiman que casi el 30% de los tiburones y rayas a nivel mundial, se encuentran amenazadas o casi amenazadas de extincion. Los cientificos tambien han manifestados que, sin los tiburones, el balance de la cadena trofica marina se vera interrumpida y la salud de los oceanos estara en peligro, con consecuencias potencialmente irreversibles para el ser humano. Los tiburones no son solo esenciales para los ecosistemas marinos, tambien son importantes para la industria del turismo y el desarrollo sostenible. Los tiburones son una atraccion principal para muchas de las operaciones de buceo en todo el mundo. Estas empresas generan empleos e ingresos para las comunidades costeras, brindando una alternativa economica a la pesca de tiburones, con mucho mas beneficios economicos para las comunidades costeras.

Nosotros los abajo firmantes, estamos en contra de la practica del aleteo en Chile y en todo el mundo; y de esta forma les agradecemos la iniciativa, pero les instamos a que promulguen de forma urgente esta ley, para que asi terminemos de manera inmediata con este tipo de practicas que son una amenaza para la conservacion y sobrevivencia de los tiburones que habitan aguas chilenas. Espero que compartan nuestra preocupacion por la disminucion de las poblaciones de tiburones y la salud de nuestros oceanos. Les instamos de aprobar la ley que prohibe el aleteo de tiburones en Chile sin ningun tipo de modificaciones o debilitamiento.

Dear Senate and Deputy Chamber members,

Sharks have played a critical role in maintaining healthy and balanced marine ecosystems since before the time of dinosaurs. However, these top predators are now being removed from our oceans at unsustainable rates.  Scientists assess that nearly 30% of sharks and related rays are threatened or near threatened with extinction.  Scientists have also found that, without sharks, the balance of the ocean's food web is disrupted and the health of the oceans is compromised, with potentially dire consequences. Sharks are not only essential for the marine ecosystem, but are also important for the tourism industry and sustainable development. Sharks are a primary attraction for thousands of diving operations around the world. These businesses generate jobs and revenue for coastal communities, providing an economic alternative to shark fishing, with far greater economic benefits for coastal communities.

We the undersigned are against the shark finning in Chile and wordwide; and for this reason we welcome the law enforcement initiative but we urge to urgently enact this law, so they end up immediately with this kind of practices that are a threat to the conservation and survival of sharks that inhabit Chilean waters. I hope you share our concern about declining shark populations and the health of our oceans. I urge you support the shark finning ban in Chile without any weakening amendments.
