Add a LGBTQ+ Unit in Standard APS Education

Discrimination is a prominent problem around the world. Recently however more people of the LGBTQ+ community have been making a stand against discrimination. We feel that the problem is very important to solve because people across the globe are losing their lives over who they are. We have brainstormed multiple ways that LGBTQ+ discrimination can be lessened in New Mexico.

We think that educating the children of today about the different lifestyles of those in the LGBTQ+ community can have them grow up to be more accepting adults and prevent further division in our community. This could help the kids realize that no matter the differences, everyone is human and deserves to be treated as such. Implementing a unit based around LGBTQ+ awareness in a Health or Sexual Education class can expose preteens to the reality of difference as well, which could lessen bullying in schools. We feel this would be more effective than having a guest speaker come in only once in an assembly.

Many people, much less kids, don’t know the difference between bisexual and pansexual or bisexual and homosexual in extreme cases. These are critical parts of learning about the LGBTQ+ community, like knowing the difference between a Cuban and a Filipino. If we were to teach children at a young age to accept those around them, discrimination would decrease tremendously.

There are many different forms of discrimination that happens in some of the most rich and accepting countries! Even though many countries have made advancements some still refuse to face the issues of discrimination and hate crimes. In South Korea, gay men in the military can be labeled as having a “Behavioral Disorder” and can be institutionalized or dishonorably discharged. If a person in the LGBTQ+ community in Japan faces domestic abuse from their partner, they will get no support from the government. Even the Northern Territory of Australia doesn’t recognize or acknowledge LGBTQ+ marriage and has a law that doesn’t allow joint or step-parent same sex adoption. The facts we have stated so far are only the laws of first world countries, third world countries are much more harsh and unforgiving. This is a horrible reality that everyone, especially those of the LGBTQ+ community, have to face.

Therefore, we feel that the government should change the standard for Health and Sexual Education classes. An entire unit should be put aside for subjects relating to LGBTQ+ sex, identity, and preference. This would not only open the eyes of the children, this would also help those who are questioning understand their emotions. This could lead to a more accepting generation and a happier life for those affected.
