Thank Indonesia for Shark and Manta Ray Sanctuary

Indonesia has created a 46,000-square-kilometer protection zone for sharks and manta rays. The no-take sanctuary is within the Coral Triangle, known as the “Amazon of the ocean", which spreads across a vast area of Southeast Asia’s waters will protect sharks and manta rays from overfishing and climate change.

Up to 73 million sharks are killed annually, mostly for their fins, for the Asian delicacy of shark fin soup, and the gills of manta rays are increasingly used in Asian medicines. Indonesia has been world's largest exporter of sharks and rays.

With the decline of 90% of some shark species populations, thank Indonesia for creating a sanctuary which could stop the extinction of many species of sharks.
