SAVE GPC Fall Graduation

Please sign if you want to have a fall graduation at Georgia Perimeter College.

Dear future GPC graduates,

This is a petition to save GPC’s fall graduation.

A few weeks ago, you all received an email from interim President Rob Watts about the cancelation of the fall commencement ceremony.

The Collegian ran a story about the cancelation in its Oct. 10 issue and, based upon the response we’ve heard, a fair number of the graduating students are still very upset.

Additionally, a local newspaper, CrossRoadsNews picked up the story and ran it on their front page.

Several Georgia State Legislators were quoted in the story:

“It’s a tragic, bad situation that the school finds itself in. It’s sad that the students have to pay the consequences of adults not doing their jobs,” said Dean Alford, who represents the 4th Congressional District on the state Board of Regents.

“Students have paid fees, so they should be entitled to graduate when they were told they were going to graduate,” said State Rep. Karla Drenner (D-District 86).

“Hopefully, we can come to some resolution where they will be able to have a graduation in December,” said State Rep. Michele Henson (D-District 87).

According to Watts’ email, not having fall graduation will save the school $14,000.

That includes expenditures such as:

  • $3,530 for a speaker

  • $7,050 for stage rental

  • $3,495 for canopy rental

  • $2,275 for the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra

The Collegian thinks that the ceremony could be held in the Clarkston gymnasium at a “bare bones” budget for a lot cheaper.

If you remove the speaker, remove canopy rental, remove the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra, and find a cheaper stage rental, the cost would decrease drastically.

While the Collegian is in the process of working on exact numbers, we believe that a fall graduation could be reasonably done for $5,000.

The editorial staff has also agreed to sacrifice its last issue in the springtime to donate $1,500 to the cause.

The Collegian has been the official voice of the students since 1987 and we want to keep that tradition going by giving you an outlet to express your grievances about the fall graduation cancelation.
