DEMAND TO END PET LOTTERY AT BREVARD COUNTY SHELTER

This dog was found abandoned in Cocoa Beach, Florida on December 18th and was taken to the BCSO Animal Shelter for 5 days and then put up for lottery. (For the month of December, all animals who get adopted are free and come with shots, microchip and are to be neutered/ spayed) ALL PAID FOR BY AJ HEIRS, My former boss and owner of Boniface Heirs Kia.

When a dog/cat is past the 5 day claim period (claim period: for owners to collect) the animal (not all, but most) are then put in the lottery for a chance to be won by all that enters. Some animals end up with 0 people interested while others have up to 10 people.

WE NEED TO GET RID OF THE PET LOTTERY (as well as changing many other things) AS THEY DO NOT ENSURE THE ANIMALS NEW HOME IS A SAFE FAMILY ENVIRONMENT.

They do NOT do any checks of any kind. They just give the winner the animal without doing a little work and making sure they're not going to be used as a fighting dog or a breeding ground to make money. All to end up to be a used and abused animal to be surrendered after it has no purpose left or used as bait.

Please sign this petition urging Sheriff Wayne Ivey to drop the lottery and make all adoptable animals first come first served with a home/background check of some sort. It should not about how fast they can get animals in and out.. But rather rehoming them to their forever home so we as a community can possibly lower the return and repopulation of animals who go to the wrong hands.

In regards to A745280. As listed on the Brevard County Sheriff's Office Animal Shelter site. She is an UNALTERED female DOG, white with a brindle ear and spot on her back.

As I went to be one of the recipients of a raffle for this dog.. A guy who was also there for her mentioned to someone next to us that he breeds them..another person next to him made a comment saying "good job! You got ANOTHER one" which confirmed what he said earlier as he must be there often.

He ended up winning her and I'm so crushed as this dog is just going to be used and abused unlike what she was intended on being. A FAMILY dog. I'm just so heartbroken that this selfish guy comes for free dogs just to make a profit and takes away from a potential happy family ending..

Something needs to be done so he and others like him can't use the shelter as a free money maker whether he was going to sell her or God knows what.. But his intentions were not good.

A volunteer from the shelter wrote, "Again, I Agree and all volunteers agree with you.  Unless there is a change in direction that comes from the top (sheriff Ivey, and director joe hellebrand) nothing will change...I've written my own letters....The lottery system isn't the worst of it, but we all just do what we can to help the animals best we can. I know it's terrible, they just want the dogs out of the shelter as soon as possible and they don't care who they go to. The place is run like a business unfortunately, paying more attention to the numbers vs the welfare of the animals.  It's very disheartening. Sorry, I wish I had better news or advice... public perception is the only way that this will change- that is definitely the way to get to Sheriff Wayne Ivey...he only runs the shelter for political gain so when there is factual information out there that makes him look bad, that's when he might actually do something."

PLEASE, I BEG YOU TO SIGN THIS PETITION AND TO SHARE TO YOUR FELLOW FRIENDS AND ANY GROUPS YOU BELONG TO SO SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY WAKES UP AND SEES THAT THINGS CAN BE BETTER AT THE SHELTER WITH A LITTLE MORE CARE AND COMPASSION FOR THE ANIMALS OF OUR COUNTY!
