Johannesburg, South Africa - Owls released into Alexander township to help control a rat infestation are being decapitated because locals are 'afraid of them'. These owls were supplied by Owl Rescue. The director said in a statement: ""They kill the birds, they decapitate them, and they take their eyes out. Last week, we had a case where school kids caught an owl and cut its legs off with a pair of scissors."
A case of animal cruelty has been opened with the NSPCA, and a plea has been sent to the City Council to stop the supply of owls to the area. The Council appears reluctant to reverse its decision. Since 1998, 83000 owls have been released in various parts Gauteng Province.
A message needs to be sent to the local authorities, stating that this barbarism needs to be stopped at all cost! Once it has reached its target, the petition will be sent to the Owl Rescue Association, so that they can hand it in to the relevant authorities for further action to be taken.
Please share this petition so that it can have greater impact.
