STOP BACP Squeeze on the Counselling Professions

  • by: Matthew Bowes
  • recipient: The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy

We the undersigned have serious concerns about the BACP's recent revisions to their Ethical Framework. We believe they are not representative of the views of many counsellors and psychotherapists in the UK. We therefore strongly object to any claim made by the BACP both now and in the future to represent psychotherapy and counselling profession/practitioners in general. We demand that any such claims including its mission statement to be "the professional body for counselling and psychotherapy" be removed immediately from its website and all publicity materials in all media.

This debate goes much wider than just what the BACP is proposing – it’s about the core values of our profession. For an excellent discussion of the issues, please follow the link

and scroll down to the paper “2014 Ethics versus Compliance. The Instituition, Ethical Psychotherapy Practice, (and Me)”

And finally, keep this diary date clear: On 26th September 2015 for a big meeting around defending the core values of psychotherapy and counselling.
