The President of the United States is lying to the American people about his dealings with a brutal dictator. That much we know. He is also misleading Congress, U.S. intelligence, and even his own advisors.
Even if President Trump were not under investigation for illegal coordination with the Putin regime to steal the 2016 election, this would be cause for concern. In the context of that reality, finding out what went on is of urgent global importance.
We, the undersigned, refuse to simply take the president at his word — especially when that word keeps changing.
And we shouldn't have to. While he did his best to lock his advisors out of his meeting with Putin, Trump relied on an American translator who knows everything that was said. House Democrats have called for Congress to subpoena Trump translator Marina Gross to get definitive answers about what was said by the two world leaders. But Republicans rejected the proposal.
This is unacceptable. Congress has a constitutional obligation to act as a co-equal branch of government and provide oversight of the Executive. Members of Congress also have a sworn duty to act in the interests of the United States. But elected Republicans seem more interested in covering for the potential crimes and threats of their party's leader than protecting Americans.
The American people deserve answers about what is going on between Trump and Putin, and Congress has the power to get those answers.
We demand Congressional Republicans join with Democrats in seeking the testimony of translator Marina Gross to get the truth about the meeting between Trump and Putin.
