Say NO to District Uniforms

Say, "No" to the implementation of School Uniforms!!

A Petition of the implementation of School Uniforms by the Parents in the Woodland Park School District

Addressed to Woodland Park Board of Education

WE THE UNDERSIGNED WOULD LIKE TO BRING YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM, WITH RECOMMENDATION(S):

  1. The survey wasmisleading as we thought it was in regards to the current school uniform.  A simple line saying, "This survey is regarding implementing a uniform and not the current dress code" could have easily cleared this up.  The fact that the board will not redo the survey makes us feel that they do not care how we feel or what we have to say.
  2. If our current dress code is "too general" why can't it just be changed to one color shirt and one color pant?  Blue shirts - Boys khaki pants - girls, khaki pants or skirt, no stretch pants….  Simple.  Why is there a need for a logo?  Identification purposes are not a good reason.  Children can be identified with the same color shirt and pants.
  3. In addition to shirt and pants, you also want to implement a uniform for gym.   It was brought to our attention by the parents who stayed after the Executive Session that it was stated, "Everything would have a logo except the socks and shoes".    This is going to be a significant cost for everyone and just not necessary.
  4. The parents were not able to ask follow up questions and most did not know that our only chance to speak would be up at the mike.  While we understand that there is a process and agenda to follow, we know a lot more people would have had something to say.

Parents were made to feel as if we were ungrateful for the job that the board was doing, which absolutely is not the case and not the issue at hand.  We understand that most of them are volunteers and we appreciate their hard work and dedication.  We just feel that the current dress code is more than adequate for a public school. Little Falls, Totowa and Passaic Valley do not have a dress code, none-the-less this level of policy that this town is trying to institute.

In closing we would like to say that the board should not just make this decision without the opinions and concerns of the parents. Why not have a meeting where the parents can voice their concerns freely or at the very least redo the survey so the results will reflect how the parents really feel about this since the last survey was misleading in our opinion?

Update #25 years ago
There is a BOE meeting Monday, Dec 10 at 7pm at Beatrice Gilmore. The agenda can be found here:
https://media.fridaysis.com/parentportal/WestPaterson/notificationAttachments/BOE%20Meeting%20Dec%2010.pdf?fbclid=IwAR3KGouGr3UorWLVBROaPWwKWX-9bJD0ilxtxOmlaTgmZ5ebKfnyzl6B0aU
There is no mention of a logo, however, on page 5 it says "It is the responsibility of the parents/guardian to purchase the school uniform directly from the vendor (s)"
Together we can make them listen. Come to the meeting!
