The AKC Novice and Open Stay Exercises Should Stay

There is an ill-advised move afoot to remove the Long Sit and Long Down from the Novice and Open classes in AKC Obedience. The new proposed replacement exercises have a number of problems. 1. The new Control exercise will make the Utility Signals exercise more difficult since the new Control exercise will include a different order of signals than the Utility signals, and the "stand" signal will be from a distance. 2. The new Stay/Get Your Leash exercise will add time to judging in Open. 3. The proposed back-to-back Sit and Down Stay exercise in Novice will make it more likely that Novice dogs will break their stays because they will have another dog behind them in two lines of dogs. 4. The traditional Stays are used frequently in real life. For example, field dogs must "honor" other dogs while those dogs retrieve birds. 5. Judges' education (both the seminars that are required every three years), as well as education of new judges, should include ways to keep dogs in a stay line from breaking their stays. 6. Clubs and judges who are not reporting these incidents should, if reported to the AKC, be sanctioned in some way, in order to assure that true incidents are dealt with by the clubs and the judges who are responsible for maintaining control of their rings. While we would prefer the Stays to stay as-is, we do realize that there are legitimate concerns, especially for the smaller dogs. Therefore, if the Board sees fit to make changes despite this petition, then we feel that further discussion by the fancy should be considered before finalizing what, in our opinion, are changes that will further damage the sport of Obedience and reduce participation in the sport.

We are still taking signatures on this petition to alter the proposal to eliminate stays. But please see the following petition, describing a proposal that should please everyone pro- and anti-stay! Please take time to read it. It allows for a split in the Open class between a Groups and Alternative Exercises.

Share with all interested parties, including the pro-stay and anti-stay folks.

Re: extensive discussions first petitioners. For them, it is a "we win, you lose" proposition. I extended an olive branch by saying "let's jointly tell the AKC Board that we should adopt the Canadian regs to provide two paths to an Open title (stays and the new exercises)", but they rejected my idea. I urge each of you to please contact the AKC Board! They are 20-25, we are 75-80%! Please don't let a vocal minority change our sport! My email is amangold0@gmail.com. Phone is 513-630-7733.

We have 455 signers of this petition so far. I am not interested in quantity. It is quality of who signed the petition. Someone mentioned that if a change might adversely affect a particular breed (e.g. if this will make it harder for certain breeds to qualify), then it is legitimate if you send this to conformation folks. It's an interesting thought. Please consider sharing this petition with your friends, co-workers and family who show in Obedience. Thank you so much for your support!

Please forward this petition to at least 10 of your friends and/or family. We need at least 4000 signatures on this to have a chance of success in making a statement that the proposed changes need to be reconsidered. Thank you!

We need to send this petition to lists of non-obedience folks. The original petition was circulated far and wide to agility, conformation, hunting, tracking lists. I was told that some folks do not want to sign it because their trainer wants the new exercises and they are intimidated. Very sad! Please don't let those folks down. Thanks so much!
