Let's put the "GREAT" back into the Barrier Reef!

The Great Barrier Reef is being damaged by something called 'bleaching'. Bleaching is caused from the warming of waters to a level where the Polyps inside the corals can't cope with the heat and die, leaving coral "bleached".
Another threat is the Crown of Thorns starfish which is also damaging the coral. They need to be carefully managed to prevent an outbreak such as what we are seeing. These are just some of the major threats to the Great Barrier Reef. Not only does this make the Barrier Reef unsightly to visitors to our beautiful country, turning them away, but this also turns away those other important visitors, such as Sea Turtles, Angel Fish and other beautiful tropical fish such as clown fish (such as Nemo); and Blue Tang fish (such as Dory). We can't let this happen! Time is of the essence here as acting now can turn this catastrophe around. (www.wwf.org.au/whitereefs) Delaying this action WILL kill our reef forever. This is the largest and most beautiful reef in the world which we all want our generation and our future generations to enjoy it as much as what we do now. HELP US PUT THE "GREAT" BACK INTO THE BARRIER REEF!

To,

The Honourable Greg Hunt MP, Minister for the Environment (Australia),

We the undersigned pledge to ensure that our "Great" Barrier Reef, needs to have political intervention to ensure that the damage endured through global warming and neglect is reversed as a matter of global as well as national urgency. Our cause is as follows:

The Great Barrier Reef is being damaged by something called 'bleaching'. Bleaching is caused from the warming of waters to a level where the Polyps inside the corals can't cope with the heat and die, leaving coral "bleached".
Another threat is the Crown of Thorns starfish which is also damaging the coral. They need to be carefully managed to prevent an outbreak such as what we are seeing. These are just some of the major threats to the Great Barrier Reef. Not only does this make the Barrier Reef unsightly to visitors to our beautiful country, turning them away, but this also turns away those other important visitors, such as Sea Turtles, Angel Fish and other beautiful tropical fish such as clown fish and Blue Tang fish. This is the largest and most beautiful reef in the world. We all want our generation and our future generations to enjoy it as much as what we do now.

Thank you,

Aleshya Norman (13yo)
