Horses Facing Slaughter and Negligence from the Bureau of Land Management

Wild horses in the U.S. are facing extinction due to round ups. These round ups are being led by the Bureau of Land Management. BLM plan to dwindle down the wild horse population from 49,000 to 27,000 in the next 5 years in order to control the horse to land ratio. This agency is in charge of protecting wild horses but are also the reason healthy horses are being killed. BLM is managing wild horse populations by regularly gathering hundreds of wild horses using helicopters in an effort to regulate their population. These roundups take place in places like Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon, and Colorado. They argue that the resources available on land only allow for the survival of a certain number of wild horses. Horse who survived the roundup, are then taken to holding pens where they await adoption, where they might be domesticated as pets or work horses. Sadly, this agency neglects to oversee who adopts the horses, which is why they were recently sued by the Animal Fund. They failed to protect 575 adopted horses from slaughter last year. BLM has a mustang adoption program but did not enforce tougher oversight of the adoption process and failed to see that the horses were going to a slaughterhouse.
Unfortunately, wild horses are being managed into extinction by the Bureau of Land Management. Instead of finding ways to properly care for these horses, they are finding ways to bring down their population. There needs to be a law that would make it illegal to round up horses in the United States and take them away from their natural environment. Please take a moment to sign this petition, asking the Bureau of Land Management to stop these horrendous round ups. Many people are still unaware of what is happening to these horses, so please spread awareness to help the horses.
